Guide TD435LS Thermal Monocular with LRF

The Guide TD435LS Thermal Monocular with LRF is a one-handed spotter for finding and ranging game before you commit to a stalk. It weighs 355g and measures 159 x 54 x 74mm, so it rides in a chest pocket rather than taking up a sling. The symmetrical housing and focusing roller mean it works just as well in either hand, which matters when the other one is holding a rifle.

Scan to 1800 metres, then confirm the distance

A 400x300 detector at 12µm pitch behind a 35mm lens gives a 1800m detection range, with a field of view of about 14 x 10 metres of ground at 100 metres. The built-in laser rangefinder reads out to 1200m, so once you have found something you can settle the question of whether it is 180 metres away or 320 before you plan a route in.

Zoom in without losing the picture

Magnification runs from 3.26x to 13.04x. Sit at the base magnification to sweep a tree line, then wind it up to check whether the heat signature at the far fence is a deer or a roo. The 0.49-inch AMOLED at 1440 x 1080 keeps the image clean through the zoom range, and the -6 to +6 diopter adjustment means it works with or without glasses.

Sensitivity for the hours after sunset

The detector is rated 15mK NETD across the 8 to 14µm waveband at 50Hz. That lower NETD figure is what lets it pull an animal out of ground that has cooled to almost the same temperature, and the fast refresh keeps movers sharp. Seven palettes are available, including White Hot, Black Hot, Iron Red and Green Hot.

A full night on one battery

A single replaceable 18650 runs the TD435LS for around 10 hours, which covers a long night with a spare left in reserve. USB-C is there for power, and video and audio recording let you keep a record of what you saw. The body is IP67 sealed and rated from -20°C to 50°C.
