Guide TE419S Thermal Monocular

The Guide TE419S Thermal Monocular is the scan tool you keep in a jacket pocket for the walk out at last light. It reads heat rather than light, so you can clear a paddock or a gully from the fence line and work out whether anything is worth the stalk before you commit to it. At 288g it goes in a pocket, not a pack.

Picks up heat out to 1000 metres

A 400x300 detector on a 12um pixel pitch sits behind a 19mm lens for a detection range of 1000m. Detection means knowing something warm is out there. The 1.4x to 5.6x zoom then lets you push in and decide what it is. Field of view is 14.4 degrees x 10.8 degrees, about 25 x 19m at 100 metres, which is wide enough to sweep a treeline or a fence run without constant panning.

Fine temperature separation once the ground has cooled

NETD is the smallest temperature difference the sensor can tell apart, and lower is better. At 15mK the TE419S still separates a fox from cooling dirt in the hours after sunset, when the whole scene has settled into a degree or two of each other and cheaper sensors go flat. It works across the 8 to 14um waveband and refreshes at 50Hz, so a pig moving across your front stays defined instead of smearing. Guide's APEXVISION processing does the image clean-up.

Seven colour palettes on an 800x600 AMOLED

The 0.32-inch AMOLED runs 800x600 and carries White Hot, Black Hot, Red Hot, Green Hot, Iron Red, Blue Hot and Sepia. Most shooters live in White Hot and switch to Iron Red when they want a warm body to lift out of a cluttered background. Dioptre adjustment of -5 to +5 means you set it once for your eyes and forget it.

Sealed, charged and ready for a wet night

The body is rated IP67 and rated to work from -20C to 50C, so dew, drizzle and a frosty pre-dawn are not an issue. The built-in battery runs 5 hours and charges over USB-C, which also handles power delivery and USB 2.0 data. A 10-minute fast charge buys roughly an hour of use if you are heading out in a hurry. Video and audio recording plus a Wi-Fi hotspot let you send footage to a phone for property records or to settle an argument back at the shed.
